Civil Rights and Civil Liberties

Answer all three parts.

1. Visit the University of Alaska Anchorage web site on the death penalty and examine the various issues presented. Then visit the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) web site and at least one other anti-death penalty site*. Then visit the pro-death penalty site of the Clark County, Indiana Prosecutor and at least one other pro-death penalty site*. Each organization expresses strong opinions on the death penalty. Contrast their positions on this issue. On what foundations do their opinions rest? How do you personally feel about this issue? Has the information gained in this search influenced your opinion? Compare the pro & anti presentations to the “objective” approach of the University of Alaska site. Which is more effective politically?

2. Look at the following sites on religious liberty:

https://topics.law.cornell.edu/wex/establishment_clause (Links to an external site.) (look at the linked cases)

here is the decision in Salazar v. Buono : https://www.oyez.org/cases/2000-2009/2009/2009_08_472 (Links to an external site.)

and

https://www.aclu.org/religion-belief/free-exercise-religion (Links to an external site.)

Here’s a news story that adds an interesting dimension to the debate:
